Eagles have postseason shot
Hennessey took a loss in its own Week 9 game, but picked up a victory of sorts in another.
Oklahoma Christian School remained undefeated last Friday with a 42-14 win at Hennessey.
The Saints scored the game’s first 42 points - all in the first half - as they improved to 9-0 and locked up the District 2A-1 championship.
Hennessey fell to 5-4 overall and is 3-3 in the district and currently in a tie for the final playoff spot with Blackwell.
The Maroons could have locked up that spot last week, but were trounced 34-0 at Alva.
That result made the final playoff spot in the district a free-for-all heading into Week 10.
Hennessey, Blackwell and Alva all have a shot to gain it.
The Eagles would provide their chances a huge boost with a win this week at Luther.
However, they can still reach the playoffs with a loss, depending on the outcomes of Alva vs. Chisholm and Blackwell vs. OCS.
OCS was able to score on offense, defense and special teams against the Eagles.
Collin Matteson scored on a 14-yard run about midway through the first quarter.
After forcing a punt on Hennessey’s ensuing drive, Grant Redwine blocked a punt and returned it 19 yards for another OCS score.
That opened the gates to a 28-point second quarter.
Kaleb Barnes had TD runs of 4 and 1 yards before Matteson struck again.
As the Eagles were threatening to score, Matteson picked off a pass and returned it 99 yards for a Saints TD.
Brandon Orme pushed the lead to 42-0 with a 3-yard run late in the half.
Hennessey’s defense put the Eagles on the board in the second half when Weston Smith returned a fumble 24 yards into the end zone.
Sebastian Gonzalez gave Hennessey its other touchdown, a 1-yard run in the fourth.
Gonzalez was 9 of 23 passing for 108 yards on the night.
Smith was his most frequent target as he caught four passes for 64 yards.
The Saints were able to snuff Hennessey’s run game.
The Eagles managed just 2.8 yards on 24 attempts.
Jessin Hardin and Nykolaus Snyder led Hennessey’s defense with six tackles apiece.
Luther also has a 5-4 overall mark, but the Lions are 5-1 in the district. Their lone district loss was to OCS.
Luther has won two straight over the Eagles, but Hennessey did stun the Lions 21-20 on the road in the first round of the 2017 playoffs.
