Cashion cemented its district supremacy with its biggest win of the season.

The Wildcats shut down Tonkawa last Friday to earn a 28-8 road win.

The win was Cashion’s (8-1) eighth straight while it ended a six-game win streak for the Buccaneers.

It also gave the Wildcats a 4-0 district mark and locked up the A-3 championship.

This is the fourth straight year for Cashion to accomplish that feat, which also locks up at least two home playoff games.

“Playing at home is always nice,” said Cashion coach Lynn Shackelford. “Winning a district title is a bigger deal than we probably make it out to be.”

Tonkawa hadn’t surrendered more than 18 points in a game this season, but Cashion led 14-0 by halftime.

Those scores came on a 16-yard pass from Ben Harman to Landon LaGasse and on a 1-yard run by Nick Nabavi.

Despite the lead, Shackelford said he knew his team could be better.

“We weren’t great up front in the first half,” he said. “We were better in the second.”

Nabavi capitalized.

The senior was able to pound out 148 yards on 23 attempts, an average of 6.4 a carry.

“He was really good for us,” Shackelford said. “They’re a physical team and we were able to match that with Nick.”

After Tonkawa’s Kai Day scored on a 37-yard run in the third quarter - and then the two-point conversion - the Bucs saw their deficit cut to 14-8.

But Harman answered in the fourth.

He scored on a 5-yard run and then hit LaGasse for a 39-yard touchdown to ice the game.

The senior was 9 of 15 through the air for 95 yards.

LaGasse caught six of those passes for 85 yards and the two scores.

However, it was Cashion’s defense that secured this win.

The Bucs averaged more than 30 points and 230 rushing yards a game.

“They’ve got three guys who are scary with the ball in their hands,” said Shackelford, referring to Tonkawa’s three-pronged rushing attack of Cameron Jackson, Roman Chandler and Day.

Jackson managed 85 yards on 12 carries, but was kept out of the end zone.

So was Morgan, who only gained 12 yards while throwing for 101. He was also picked off twice.

Day’s touchdown run was his only positive yardage of the night as Tonkawa ran for 154 total yards.

“Our defense was really big for us because they really are good on offense,” Shackelford added.

Bryce Burke had nine stops to lead the unit.

Gavin Phippen, who had one of the interceptions, added six tackles while Mason Manning and Jackson Vandruff had five apiece.

Nabavi hauled in the Wildcats’ other interception as the defense had three takeaways overall.

Before hosting in the first round of the playoffs, Cashion will close out its regular season at Crescent.

When Cashion does host either Wynnewood or Dibble in the first round on Nov. 12, it will be the Wildcats’ first home game since Oct. 8.
