Cashion, Crescent in as teams; Hill, Burnham qualify for KHS
It wasn’t sealed until the final scores were reported, but Kingfisher High School has two boys golfers headed to state.
Blake Hill shot a 150 and Tristun Burnham a 152 over 36 holes Monday during a Class 4A regional at Kingfisher Golf Course.
Those scores qualified the two as individuals for next week’s state tournament in Blanchard.
Hill was steady throughout the day as he shot a pair of 75s for his score.
“He was solid all day tee to green,” coach Chris Combs said. “He flagged several irons and every time I looked up he was in the middle of the fairway.”
The day wasn’t as smooth for Burnham.
He opened with an 81 to put him outside the chase to qualify.
“He had a rough first round and was clearly frustrated, but had a choice to make,” Combs said.
“He could allow it to linger or hit the reset button for the second round.”
Reset he did.
Burnham rebounded with a 1-over-par 71 that included a chip-in for birdie on the ninth hole, which was 18th of the round (and 36th of the day).
“He played much better and that punctuated it,” Combs said.
The top-three teams, top-four overall medalists and then the top-three scores from non-qualifying teams all moved on to next Monday and Tuesday’s 54-hole tournament at Winter Creek Golf & Country Club.
Elk City won the team title with a total of 565, which included a 4-under par 276 on the first 18.
Heritage Hall (571) and Bethany (668) also qualified for state.
Heritage Hall’s Matthew Smith (136) was the individual regional champ.
Tres Hill of Elk City (137) was second.
Kyle McLaughlin (140) of Heritage Hall defeated Elk City’s Travis Poole (140) in a playoff for third place.
Mount St. Mary’s Max Garza locked up the first individual spot with a 144.
Hill was comfortably in at second.
Woodward’s Reid Williams opened with a 76 and was in the hunt for an individual qualification, but came back with an 82 for a total of 158.
Also for Kingfisher, Jax Sternberger - a sophomore along with his two teammates - shot 86 and 87 for a 173.
“His best rounds have come recently and I know he will continue to improve going forward,” Combs said.
Cashion, Crescent in
Cashion shot a 647 to take third and Crescent a 664 for fifth in their 2A regional at Turkey Creek Golf Course in Hennessey.
Those scores advanced both to next week’s state tournament at Earlywine in Oklahoma City.
Cashion was led by Patrick Sexton, who had rounds of 79 and 80.
Camden Maroney shot 81 and 80.
The medalist honor went to Crescent’s Dominic Stevens, who has yet to not win a tournament this season.
Stevens fired rounds of 66 and 67 to help lead the Tigers to state.
