Farrell, Watkins state-bound
Mia Farrell and Sydney Watkins are state-bound.
Kingfisher’s No. 1 doubles team took third place Monday in the Class 4A regional tournament at the Oklahoma City Tennis Center.
The duo locked up their state bid when they defeated Chisholm 6-2, 6-0 in a consolation bracket match.
They followed it up with a three-set victory over Mount St. Mary in the third-place match.
After dropping the first set 6-4, Watkins and Farrell came back to win the final two sets 6-4, 6-2.
They’ll compete in the state tournament - also at the Oklahoma City Tennis Center - this Friday and Saturday.
Farrell and Watkins opened against Beaver and easily advanced to the semifinals with a 6-0, 6-2 victory.
That pitted them against second-seeded Crossings.
Kingfisher had two set points in the first set, but couldn’t close out and eventually lost 7-5, 6-3.
Once in the elimination bracket, Kingfisher dominated Chisholm to ensure it had one of the regional’s four spots at state.
The No. 2 doubles team of Taylor Mills and Frida Gonzalez also medaled, but just missed out on a spot at state.
The duo took fifth when it defeated Chisholm in the fifth-place match.
After opening with a loss to eventual regional champ Crossings, the team beat Beaver 6-1, 6-1.
In the match to secure a spot at state, Gonzalez and Mills were defeated 6-0, 6-0 by Chickasha.
