Watkins takes 2nd at USTA event
Kingfisher’s Sydney Watkins went 3-1 last weekend to capture the runner-up trophy at the Oakwood Spring Classic tennis tournament in Enid.
Watkins was defeated 4-1, 4-0 in the championship match of the United States Tennis Association event’s 16-under division.
The matches featured short sets (first to win four games as opposed to six) to allow more matches to be played.
The Kingfisher High School sophomore opened her day with three straightset wins.
She blanked Oklahoma City’s Roselin Coti 4-0, 4-0 and followed that up with a 4-1, 4-0 victory over Lauren Potter of Oklahoma City.
In the semifinals, Watkins disposed of Norman’s Ellie Lupia 4-2, 4-2.
Watkins is a member of the KHS tennis team, which will take part in a Class 4A regional next Monday at the Oklahoma City Tennis Center.
