Lady Jackets are tops in potential state tournament preview
Another statement was made last week by the Kingfisher High School girls golf team.
The Lady Jackets won the Tara Robbins Girls Invitational hosted by Cushing on Monday at the Buffalo Rock Golf & Venue.
It’s the same course that will play host to the Class 4A state tournament and this invitational featured most of the teams expected to contend for that title.
Top-ranked Kingfisher beat them all, though by a narrow margin.
The Lady Jackets shot a 363 using the Maxwell format (the top-four scores count toward a team’s total on each hole) to edge No. 4 Wagoner by a single stroke.
Class 3A’s third-ranked Perkins-Tryon was third with a 365 and 4A’s No. 7 Cushing fourth at 368.
Hilldale, ranked No. 2 in 4A and the 2019 state champ, was fifth at 371.
Senior Maddi Kamas also pulled in another individual title as she shot a 2-over-par 72.
Ft. Gibson’s Layne Ailshie was the only other player to break 80 as she was second with a 78.
For Kingfisher, Katey Brickman shot a 91.
Kylie Hood and Olivia Wilcox each fired 100s and Kari Shepard came in with a 106.
Kamas followed that up on Wednesday with yet another individual crown.
She carded a 2-under 68 to win medalist honors in the Putnam City North Invitational at Lincoln Park (East) Golf Course.
Kamas was the only player to shoot under-par in the large-school tournament.
Kingfisher’s 369 was good for seventh out of 22 teams.
Wilcox added a 96 and Brickman a 99 for the Lady Jackets.
Shepard shot 106 and Hood 107.
The postseason is quickly approaching.
KHS will be one of four regional host sites for 4A girls on April 27.
Joining the Lady Jackets will be Anadarko, Bethany, Bridge Creek, Chickasha, Classen SAS, Cushing and Weatherford as well as two individual golfers from Harrah and one from Elgin.
The state tournament will be May 5-6 at the Cushing course.
