Burnham shoots even-par 70 during KHS invitational
Kingfisher golfers didn’t take home any individual trophies and there aren’t enough of them for a full team.
That didn’t mean it wasn’t a successful day for them Wednesday at the Kingfisher Large-School Boys Invitational.
All three KHS golfers shot the best rounds of their high school careers despite the wind - in a rarity - blowing in from the east and the course being soaked from an overnight rain.
Tristun Burnham shot an even-par 70 to lead the KHS pack.
“I felt I left a couple of strokes out there,” he said after his round. “I probably could have gone 2- or 3-under.”
Teammate Blake Hill carded a 75 and Jax Sternberger shot 88, his best round by seven strokes.
“There’s always room to improve, but the guys did pretty well considering the conditions,” coach Chris Combs said.
Burnham’s score placed him seventh individually as six golfers shot under-par.
Oklahoma Christian School’s Ryder Cowan and Christian Heritage’s Drew Goodman both fired 6-under 64s, which set up a playoff for medalist honors.
As they replayed the par-4 18th hole, both sent their drives toward the 17th fairway.
Cowan landed his approach shot about 10 feet behind the pin and Goodman about 18 feet short, but also on the green.
Goodman, a senior who has signed to play at the University of Oklahoma, skirted the side of the hole with his birdie putt.
Cowan, only a sophomore, sank his for the win.
Goodman’s Crusaders won the team title with a 276 in the Maxwell format scoring system.
CHA is ranked No. 1 in 3A.
Heritage Hall, second-ranked in 4A, was the team runner-up at 282.
Elk City took third with its 293.
The Elks’ Tres Hill, who will play at Oklahoma City University, fired a bogey-free 65 to take third individually.
Cowan’s teammate, Bryant Polhill, was fourth with a 66 and Heritage Hall’s Kyle McLaughlin took fifth with a 68.
