Back-to-back area losses end Hennessey’s run
If Hennessey could have carried forward its momentum from the first quarter of its area championship game, the Eagles would be in the state tournament.
However, that didn’t materialize for the final three quarters Friday or the entirety of Saturday and instead of the state tournament, the Eagles’ season is done.
Hennessey was downed 53-36 by No. 2 Hooker in their Class 2A area title game at the Stride Center in Enid.
With one more crack at state, the Eagles lost 45-38 to No. 15 Morrison in Saturday’s consolation championship.
The start of the area was just what the Eagles wanted.
They had four 3-pointers and jumped on top of the Bulldogs 19-16 in the first quarter.
Juan Dominguez had seven points at that point for the Eagles, but also tweaked his back in the game.
Hooker answered with a 13-2 run in the second quarter.
After the early scoring barrage, Hennessey scored just 17 points over the final three quarters.
Dominguez led the way with 11 points and Chris Tovar scored nine.
Morrison was the team getting off to a hot start Saturday.
The Wildcats were up 17-7 after a quarter, but Hennessey managed to cut its deficit to three by halftime.
However, Morrison was able to finish off the game in the second half.
“Anytime we made a push, they answered,” coach Brady Page said after his team finished the year 13-6.
Dominguez was limited to two points.
“He wasn’t 100 percent,” Page added. “Not having him at full strength makes it that much tougher for us to score.”
The Eagles were led by Jael Torres’ 15 points.
Cristian Rodriguez scored 12.
