Hennessey squads takes 2 from Crescent after extended layoff

Crescent hung in there with 2A’s sixth-ranked team for three quarters and more.

The Tigers just couldn’t quite pull off the upset for their first win.

Hennessey outscored its guests 11-2 in the fourth quarter Tuesday to pull out a 40-28 Three Rivers Conference win.

“We played like we had been quarantined and then on a break,” said Hennessey coach Brady Page after his team moved to 4-0.

It was Hennessey’s first time to play since Dec. 8. The Eagles (and girls team) went into COVID-19 protocol the next day and that led into the holiday break.

Cristian Rodriguez showed no signs of the early rust as he knocked down three first-quarter 3-pointers.

However, the Eagles didn’t score a second-quarter field goal and Crescent managed to take a tie game into the break.

Juan Dominguez lit up the scoreboard for 11 points in the third quarter, but was the only Eagle with a field goal in the frame and, again, Crescent didn’t go away.

However, Cade Watkins’ scored the Tigers’ lone two points in the fourth quarter as their upset hopes faded.

Watkins led his team with 11 points.

Kade Varner and Tayon Johnson scored six apiece.

Dominguez scored 15 for the Eagles and Rodriguez 12. Jael Torres added six.

Lady Eagles grab 2nd win of season

Only four players scored for Hennessey last Tuesday, but that was more than enough for them to pick up their second win.

Gracie Mills poured in a game-high 19 points as the Lady Eagles dispatched Crescent 39-24 in a home conference game.

It was Hennessey’s first win since its season opener as it moved to 2-2.

Mills scored 10 points as part of a 13-7 push in the second quarter.

That saw Hennessey take a seven-point halftime lead, one it grew to 13 points in the third.

The Lady Eagles also got eight points each from Juliana Macy and Kass Amburn.

Crescent, still looking for its first win, was paced by Raychel Johnson’s six points. Tatum Cummings scored five.
