KHS hosting Clinton Friday
Just before - and even during - Kingfisher’s game with Bridge Creek last week, KHS coaches and Athletic Director Jay Wood were actively searching for an opponent this week.
It turns out that foe will be Clinton, which visits the Jackets at 7 p.m. Friday for Kingfisher’s homecoming.
The scheduling was necessary because Oklahoma City Public Schools announced early Friday evening it was canceling all activities this week, which included Douglass visiting KHS this Friday.
Wood said he and coaches immediately visited the Skordle app to see which teams would be losing out on Week 5 games either due to the OKCPS measure or others affected by opponents being in quarantine.
“We were in talks with Clinton while we were playing Bridge Creek,” Wood said.
But it also wasn’t that simple.
Clinton was set to host Chickasha for its own homecoming, but Chickasha will be sitting out its second of two weeks of games due to quarantine.
Clinton initially scheduled a Lawton school to visit the Tornado Bowl, but that eventually fell through.
Meantime, KHS was also in talks with Kellyville, which initially seemed a viable option.
However, Wood said, a potential outbreak at the Creek County Fair may have affected the Kellyville student body, including players, and possibly coaching staff as well.
Other options were finding future district opponents who didn’t have a Week 5 game and playing them ahead of schedule, which might allow for the Douglass game to be played at a later date.
None of that worked out.
Finally, on Sunday, Clinton and Kingfisher came to an agreement to have the game here.
“It worked out great,” Wood said. “We still get to have our homecoming game and it’s a quality opponent on top of that.”
