HHS ends 14-game winless drought

It had been nearly two full years since the Hennessey football team had experienced victory on the field.

That drought ended last Friday when the Eagles sent Crooked Oak back to Oklahoma City with a 33-7 defeat.

Sebastian Gonzalez ran for three touchdowns and Keigen Crites two more as the Eagles won for the first time since defeating Oklahoma Centennial - a school that no longer exists - on Oct. 19, 2018.

Since then, Hennessey had lost 14 straight games.

That included the first 12 under head coach Paul Hix.

While Hennessey’s defense had only given up 27 points through two games this season, the offense had struggled to get on track.

That ended against the Rufnex as Crites and Gonzalez both ran for more than 100 yards and the Eagles scored more points than the two previous contests combined.

Gonzalez capped both first-half scoring drives.

The sophomore raced in from 24 yards out at 1:15 of the first quarter then ran in the two-point conversion.

His 1-yard run at 9:52 of the second quarter gave Hennessey a 14-0 halftime lead.

The two scoring drives were a combined 20 plays and covered 143 yards.

Crites added to it in the third quarter with his 11-yard touchdown run to push the lead to 21-0.

It grew to 27-0 when Gonzalez punched in an 8-yard score at 5:06 of the third.

Crites iced the game in the fourth when he burned the Rufnex for another 21- yard touchdown.

The Eagles had - by far - their best rushing performance on the season with 277 yards.

Crites got 16 totes and finished with 130 yards.

Gonzalez netted 107 yards with his 18 carries. He also threw for 21 yards.

The Hennessey defense stayed stingy.

The Eagles forced three turnovers and gave up 145 total yards.

The Rufnex only managed 16 rushing yards while Jay Jech and Justin Nielson both picked off a pass.

Kaden Hawk and Nielson led the team with six tackles apiece. Adan Valdez and Alan Perez had five apiece.
