Kingfisher runners blaze fast trail at Turkey Creek
The Turkey Creek Classic turned into a dominant performance for the Kingfisher girls cross country teams.
Both the high school and junior high girls teams took first place Saturday in their respective races at Turkey Creek Golf Course in Hennessey.
The Lady Jackets’ topfive runners all scored in the top-10.
Their 29 points was far better than runner-up OKC Knights’ 100. Woodward was third with 107 and Hennessey took fourth with 109.
Junior Katon Lunsford was again the first Lady Jacket to cross the finish line.
She ran the 3,200 meter course in 13:29 and was second overall.
Senior Zoey Evans was fourth in 13:32 and fellow senior Andrea Becerra fifth in 13:50.
Emmy Lunsford was ninth overall, but eighth in the team scoring and Chesni Newkirk was 11th (10th).
Two more Lady Jackets finished in the top-20 as Hannah Francis took 12th and Jacee Mueggenborg 16th.
Taryn Jech led Hennessey’s charge with an eighth place finish (seventh in team standing).
Sol Tarango was 13th (12th).
Neither KHS nor Hennessey fielded enough runners for a boys’ team score, but the Jackets still had their share of success.
Jayden Newkirk was second among 111 runners as he finished the 5K course in 17:53.
Connor Hine was two spots behind Newkirk in 18:32.
The Kingfisher junior high girls team scored just 36 points to beat host Hennessey by 40.
Scout Snodgrass took second overall, but first in the team points.
Teammate Lily Lunsford was right behind her in third (second) while Liberty Starr was fifth (third).
Terry Ann McCully was 17th (14th) and Kinley Taylor 19th (16th) to give KMS all of its scorers in the top-20.
Tayler Franklin led Hennessey with her eighthplace (sixth) finish. Jacelyn Matousek and Star Torres were also among the top-10 in team points.
Will Neuman led the Kingfisher junior high boys by taking fourth in that race.
In the fifth and sixth grade boys race, Dover’s Jessy Price took first place overall out of 44 runners. • • •
