Jackets split with Clinton, finish 4th in baseball district

Kingfisher split its series with Clinton last week to finish 7-5 in district games.

However, the Red Tornadoes’ 8-2 victory at KHS on Tuesday was enough to give them third place in the district.

KHS had knocked off Clinton 14-12 on the road Monday in a slugfest.

Clinton’s ability to avenge the loss Tuesday also gave it a 7-5 district mark.

However, the run differential in those two games favored the Reds, giving them third place.

Monday’s contest not only featured 26 runs, but 26 hits as well.

The Jackets led 9-4 at one point, but let it slip away as Clinton scored seven straight for an 11-9 lead.

But the Jackets roared back with a five-run seventh inning.

Bryce Cockayne’s single scored a run to bring the Jackets within a run.

Bode Williams later singled to bring home Eli Johnson as the tying run.

It also kept the bases loaded for Casen Chlouber.

The freshman put down a bunt that eventually led to three runs crossing the plate.

Clinton quickly scored a run with a triple in the bottom half of the inning, but Cockayne derailed the Reds’ hopes of a combeack.

He caught a fly ball in right field for the first out, then fired home to catch the runner trying to score for a double play.

Jett Braun struck out the final batter to earn the save.

Damien Haynes proved big offensively for the Jackets as he went 3 for 4 and drove in three runs.

The Jackets had seven total hits.

They were limited to two hits in Tuesday’s loss.

Clinton scored twice in the top-half of the first and never surrendered the lead.

Haynes had one of those hits and Tanner Parker the other.

Parker and Johnson drove in a run each.

Elk City won District 4A-4 with a 12-0 mark. The Elks were 26-3 overall at week’s end.

Weatherford was second at 10-2 while KHS and Clinton followed with their 7-5 records.

Woodward took fifth with a 4-8 record, Anadarko sixth at 2-10 and Western Heights was winless in the district.
