KHS stays in the hunt
Lady Jackets topple Sallisaw to open area
Kingfisher battled size and adversity to make it at least one more day in this basketball season.
The Lady Jackets came from behind Thursday to beat Sallisaw 48-42 in a Class 4A area consolation game at Noble High School.
It was the first of three straight wins KHS needed over the weekend to make a return trip to the state tournament. The second opportunity arrived Friday afternoon (after press time) against Oologah.
Sallisaw featured a pair of post players in Addyson Gream and Madison Bolin that proved more than a handful.
Gream, an Oklahoma Wesleyan signee, had her way inside as she scored 12 points to twice lead the Lady Diamonds to a ninepoint lead.
KHS kept in it from the outside.
The Lady Jackets nailed six first-half 3-pointers… half of them from their own post duo of Kadyn Daugherty and Raegan Snider.
Gream scored at the end of the half to put her team up 27-24.
In the third quarter, the Lady Diamonds went to Bolin.
Though she nailed two first-half treys, Bolin worked the blocks for two early buckets in the third.
But then the two mostly went quiet.
Addy Matthews and EmilyMyersbothknocked down big third-quarter 3-pointers and Kingfisher’s full-court pressure continually frustrated the Lady Diamonds.
KHS got a 35-34 lead headed into the fourth and refused to let go.
Matthews scored six in the fourth including making all four free throws.
Snider, Abbie Myers and Emily Myers both knocked down buckets as well.
Meantime, Gream and Bolin - who combined for 26 points in the first three quarters - had just two total points in the fourth.
Matthews ended her day with 20 points, 10 in each half.
Emily Myers scored eight and Snider seven.
Daugherty finished with six points while Peyton Walker scored five.
Gream led Sallisaw with 15 points.
