Eagles too much for Watonga in 2A district

Twelve Eagles scored Saturday as Hennessey ran through a conference foe to open the playoffs.

Fourth-ranked Hennessey thumped Watonga 72-33 to claim a 2A district championship and stay in the winner’s bracket entering this week’s regional.

Hennessey will host No. 20 Sayre at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the opening round before the remainder of the regional goes to Hinton.

Watonga, a member of the Three Rivers Conference with Hennessey, plays Merritt in an elimination game at 3 p.m. Thursday in Hennessey.

When Hennessey hosted Watonga earlier in the regular season, it was just a few days removed from a dramatic win in the conference tournament championship game.

The home team was “flat,” according to coach Brady Page and squeaked out a 43-39 victory.

This time around, the host Eagles had a bit more sharpness to them.

After going up 12-4 in the first quarter, Hennessey erupted for 22 points in the second.

A lot of that came from Hunter Weber, who scored all 11 of his points in the quarter.

Layton Choate added seven more.

Already up 15, Hennessey started the second half on a 19-6 run.

Choate led all scorers with 13 points.

Hennessey (20-3) also got eight points each from James Sims and Ethan Munroe.

Sims scored six in the first quarter while Munroe got all of his in the fourth.

Watonga won the girls game by the same score, 72-33.

The loss sent Hennessey into the consolation bracket.

The Lady Eagles host Sayre at 1:30 p.m. Thursday in an elimination game.
