Janice Louise Weigel Westphal
Janice Louise Weigel Westphal was born March 30, 1931, to Archie and Clara Weigel in Platteville, Wisc.
She passed away Feb. 17, 2023, in Kingfisher, at Homestead Assisted Living Center.
Janice attended elementary, middle, high school and college in Platteville, Wisc., before beginning a career in teaching English education.
She taught in La Crosse, Wisc., until 1956 when she married Edward B. Westphal.
Janice and Ed had two sons: John, born in 1957 in Nevada, and Mark, born in 1959 in Michigan.
She and her husband, along with the boys, lived in Tempiute, Nev., Alabaster and Tawas City, Mich., and Watonga and Yukon.
Janice continued teaching throughout her married life as she followed Ed through his career transfers.
In 1982, Jan started pursuing her master’s degree and in 1986 she was selected by the University of Oklahoma to the Oklahoma Writing Project.
During her life, Janice volunteered as a Sunday school teacher, Den Mother in Scouts and Library Board.
She was also an active member in the St. Paul’s Sweet Shop and Bethlehem Bazaar, Mary Ruth Circle (Bible study), XYZ, Michigan’s Teachers Association, Homemakers Club and Lutheran Church and Garden Club. Her other favored activities were reading and travel.
Janice’s greatest pride was her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Janice is survived by her sons John Westphal and wife Debbie of Loyal, Mark Westphal of Watonga; grandson Dustin and wife Brandi of El Reno; and granddaughters Kandice Ahlberg and husband Nate of Edmond, Jessica Rowley and husband Colby of Wheeler, Texas, Windy, Erica and Monica Westphal of Watonga; and nine great-grandchildren.
She is also survived by one sister, Mary Jean Jaeger of Golden, Colo., and numerous nieces and nephews.
Janice was preceded into death by her loving husband Edward B. Westphal, daughter- in-law Diana Westphal, sister Ruth VanMatre and husband Bill, brother in-law Winton Jaeger, her parents and grandparents.
Funeral Services for Jan will be 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 23, at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church of Watonga with Rev. Orval Peters officiating.
Burial will follow at the I.O.O.F Cemetery in Watonga with Wilkinson Mortuary in charge of arrangements.
