Lady Jackets dominate Cleveland Invitational
Taylor Young was curious how her team would bounce back after a disappointing loss at Tuttle last week.
The team gave her an answer in the form of three dominant wins and a tournament championship.
The Lady Jackets wrapped up their second straight Cleveland Invitational on Saturday with a 49-25 thumping of Cascia Hall in the title game.
After dropping a 3426 decision at Tuttle on Tuesday, KHS won its three tournament games by a total of 77 points.
“We have a young group, so I was happy with how they responded coming off a loss on the road,” Young said.
Addy Matthews scored 21 points in each the semifi nals and finals.
The junior nailed five 3-pointers in each game and hit 50 percent from long range in the championship.
“She shot it well and is continuing to get better,” Young said.
KHS led Cascia Hall after a quarter, then went on a 13-0 run in the second for a 19-point halftime lead.
Cascia Hall never recovered. The Lady Commandos couldn’t solve Kingfisher’s defense as they committed 28 turnovers, which led to 27 KHS points.
Kingfisher took 54 field goal attempts while Cascia Hall had just 24.
Sophomore Raegan Snider was a big part of the early push as she scored nine of her 13 points in the first half.
She also finished with six rebounds.
Snider had eight points, five boards and five steals in the 56-35 victory against Metro Christian in the semifinals. That came after leading the team with 17 points in the 5624 win over Moore JV in the opener.
“I thought Raegan played well this weekend,” Young said. “She is young, but is starting to figure some things out on both ends of the floor.”
Peyton Walker scored 11 and grabbed four steals against Metro Christian.
She added four points, four assists and five steals against Cascia Hall.
Emily Myers scored five in the title game as Kingfisher moved to 4-1 on the season.
The team hosted Newcastle on Tuesday (after press time) and hosts Elk City Friday in its final two games before the holiday break.
“We have a lot we still need to work on, but I think this group will continue to improve as the season goes on,” Young said.
