HHS squads finish third at Frontier Shootout
Despite playing short-handed, Hennessey was still able to claim third place in the Frontier Shootout.
The Eagles manhandled Regent Prep 59-22 in Saturday’s third-place game.
That was after a 61-51 loss to Kellyville in Friday’s semifinal.
Hennessey (3-2) played the tournament without James Sims, who sat out with a concussion.
“There were times we really needed him against Kellyville,” said coach Brady Page. “But we hope to get him back this week.”
The Ponies outscored Hennessey 21-12 in the third quarter to open a nine-point lead.
The Eagles never could close it in the fourth.
As Hennessey struggled to connect from the field, Kellyville’s Easton Nance scored eight of his 14 in the third quarter and Jaustin Miles six of his 22 in the fourth.
Layton Choate and Jael Torres scored 12 apiece for Hennessey.
Torres only had two in the second half.
Four Eagles reached double figures in Saturday’s win.
Garret Vinson came off the bench to nail four 3-pointers.
He led the team with 14 points along with Torres.
Choate had 10 of his 12 in the third quarter while Hunter Weber scored all 10 of his in the second half.
When the first rankings were released on Monday, Hennessey was No. 4 in Class 2A.
“We’ll take that,” Page said. “I think most coaches were aware we haven’t been at full strength.”
The Hennessey girls also took home some hardware as they were third in their bracket.
They got their second win of the tournament by beating Blackwell 36-33 in the third place game.
The Lady Eagles held Blackwell to just eight firsthalf points, but the Lady Maroons woke up in the second half.
A 10-point halftime lead was trimmed to five after three quarters and then even more in the fourth.
Katie Kennedy helped keep them at bay with four fourth-quarter points.
She also had two big treys in the third quarter as part of her team-high 12 points.
Larissa Macy and Yuridia Rios scored six apiece.
Hennessey was dealt its first loss of the season in Friday’s semifinals.
The Lady Eagles were beaten by eventual champ Frontier, 79-47.
