Doubles teams reach 2nd day

Both of Kingfisher’s doubles teams made it to the second day of the Class 4A state tennis tournament before eventually being eliminated.

It took three sets for Riverfield Country Day’s Johnson Hale and Anthony Harper to knock out William Shaver and Caden Kitchens in No. 1 doubles.

The two teams split the first two sets Saturday in their consolation quarterfinal at the Oklahoma City Tennis Center.

The Riverfield duo won the first set 6-4 before Kitchens and Shaver came back to sweep the second set 6-0.

Hale and Harper finished it out by winning the third set 6-3 to advance.

The tournament started Friday as the Jacket duo fell victim to Metro Christian’s team of Beau Aspenson and Jack Michalcik by a score of 6-1, 6-2.

The Metro team eventually finished fourth in the tournament.

After the loss, Kitchens and Shaver bounced back early Friday evening to beat Rejoice Christian’s Conner McMullin and Gavin Tew 6-1, 6-0 to advance to Saturday.

The No. 2 doubles team of Easton Pine and Jett Matson also advanced to the quarterfinals of the consolation bracket.

That’s where they were knocked off 6-2, 6-4 by Wagoner’s Zac Daley and James Perez.

Matson and Pine ran into a buzzsaw in the opening round.

They were swept 6-0, 6-0 by Holland Hall’s Julian Aaronson and Drake Stoller, who eventually won the state championship.

Later on Friday, Matson and Pine beat Harrah’s Nicholas Klapper and Tyler Knoch 6-3 in the first set and were up 2-1 in the second when the Harrah team had to default due to injury.

That advanced Matson and Pine into Saturday’s match.

Holland Hall won the team state championship.

The Dutch scored 36 points to distance themselves from a three-way tie for state runner-up.

Elk City, Regent Prep and Riverfield scored 13 points apiece in the tournament.
