Jackets hold on at Woodward to stay undefeated in district
James Perdue came on in relief Monday to shut the door on Woodward and keep Kingfisher’s unbeaten district record intact.
Perdue picked up the save with 1 1/3 innings of work as the Jackets beat the Boomers 10-9 in a District 4A-4 road game.
The victory pushed KHS to a 5-0 mark in the district.
The Jackets already owned sweeps over Anadarko and Western Heights. Woodward made the return trip to Kingfisher on Tuesday (after press time) to wrap up the home-and-home.
“We didn’t play very well, but we got the win,” coach Stan Blundell said after his Jackets committed three errors, surrendered a six-run lead early and nearly a four-run lead late.
The Jackets scored the game’s first six runs.
Isaiah Medellin’s double in the second inning made it a 5-0 game and Dallen Barton was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score Slade Snodgrass.
The Boomers charged back with three runs in the bottom half of the second then tied it with three more in the third.
The Jackets reclaimed the lead with a four-run fourth inning.
That included a Grayson Bromlow RBI single and a two-run bloop single from Jett Braun.
Woodward scratched home two runs in the bottom of the frame and got one more in the fifth.
The Boomers had the tying run on third base before Medellin coaxed a fly ball to get out of the jam.
Medellin got the first two outs in the sixth before surrendering a single and making way for Perdue.
Perdue got out of the inning by forcing a groundout.
He then sandwiched a Woodward single with a pair of strikeouts in the seventh before ending the game with a groundout. That gave him the save and Medellin the win.
The Jackets collected 13 hits.
Tate Barton, Bromlow, Braun and Medellin had two apiece.
Braun and Medellin each drove in two runs.
KHS was 7-4 overall after the win.
The Jackets went 1-3 over the weekend at the I-40 Classic.
They lost 11-8 Thursday to Lookeba-Sickles and 5-0 to Clinton.
They came back Friday to knock off Leedey before closing it out Saturday with a 9-1 setback to Weatherford.
Also on Friday, Kingfisher made the trip to Oklahoma City to beat Western Heights 14-0 and 12-0 in district games.
