Lady Longhorns extend streak; DHS boys’ ended
A quick start last Friday propelled the Dover Lady Longhorns to the fourth straight win…and on homecoming night.
Rylee Buck was crowned homecoming queen before the game, then scored eight points during a big first quarter in what turned out to be a 38-28 victory over visiting Pond Creek-Hunter.
Buck and Kynli Boeckman each made two 3-pointers in the quarter while fellow senior Ashley Gamez also scored six in that first frame.
They combined for a 20-6 Dover lead and the Lady Longhorns were never threatened.
Boeckman finished with a game-high 15 points.
Buck scored 11, Gamez nine and Joi Caldwell rounded out the scoring with three.
Dover upped its season record to 11-6 with the victory.
The Dover boys didn’t see the fairy tale homecoming ending.
Instead, the Longhorns saw their 14-game win streak snapped in a 37-36 loss to Class A’s 14thranked Panthers.
It was Dover’s first loss since the season opener to Lomega in November.
The visitors’ Gabe Jones had two big moments in the game.
He sank a shot from beyond half-court as the third-quarter buzzer sounded to give his team a 26-24 lead.
Dover was able to reclaim the lead in the fourth, but Blayne Tefft took it back with a late jumper.
Jones followed that up with two free throws for a 37-34 Panther advantage.
That proved to be enough.
Dover’s Jonah Pendergraft answered with two free throws on the other end, making it a one-point game.
Dover then forced a turnover to regain possession with just seconds remaining.
After a timeout, Dover ran a play, but Pendergraft’s driving shot fell short.
Pendergraft led all scorers with 16 points.
Carter Kitchens scored eight while Casen Buck and Lucas Conrady, who was crowned the homecoming king, added four apiece.
Micah Westrope led the Panthers with 14 points while Tefft added 13.
Dover dropped to 14-2 while PC-H moved to 10-4.
It could be the first of two meetings in just over a week.
Dover is the top seed in this week’s Skeltur Conference Tournament while the Panthers are the second seed. The tournament will be played this week in Enid. (Ed. note: See schedule in this edition.)
