Lady Jackets go 2-1 in eventful soccer week
The Kingfisher High School girls got a dramatic win, a convincing win and a closer-than-it-looked defeat last week as the end of their soccer season nears.
The week ended on “senior night” Thursday as the Lady Jackets were defeated 5-2 by Mount St. Mary.
The visitors had the steady 25 miles-per-hour wind at their backs in the first half and got three goals in the final 15 minutes of the half to build a lead.
With its turn with the wind, Kingfisher scored quickly in the second half as Maleonia Vogt deflected a shot into the net.
Later, Jaquelin Rivera netted her own goal to pull Kingfisher within 3-2.
However, the visitors were able to tack on two late goals to secure the win and lock up third place in District 3A-2.
The loss gave KHS a 3-4 district mark and snapped a two-game win streak.
The first of those came Monday at Cordell.
Trailing in the second half, Vogt crossed to Peyton Walker, who found the back of the net in the 50th minute to tie it up 4-4.
In overtime, Vogt was fouled about 25 yards away from the goal.
Hannah Click took the free kick and perfectly placed it just over the fingertips of Cordell’s keeper to give KHS the 5-4 victory.
Rivera scored twice in the game.
She gave the Lady Jackets a 2-1 lead in the 29th minute on a cross from Walker.
Ximena Agundiz scored after a Click free kick just four minutes earlier to tie the game, 1-1.
After Cordell knotted the game up 2-2, Vogt took a shot that bounced off the keeper’s hands. Vogt gathered it back up and passed to Rivera, who scored for a 3-2 lead.
Cordell was able to score twice more before halftime to take the 4-3 lead.
Kingfisher’s ability to keep bouncing back and eventually win was a sign of the team’s growth, said the coach.
“That was a fun game,” said coach Aniessa Edsall. “I keep talking about how they’re improving all the time, but it’s evident every game.
“There are some on our team who have played soccer since they were tiny and there are just as many who have only started playing within the last few years. It’s really fun to see how the things we work on in practice are seen in the games we play.”
Edsall and the hometown fans got to see a lot of it in Tuesday’s 9-3 home win over Alva.
Click and Vogt both recorded hat tricks.
Kingfisher scored four times in the first 15 minutes.
It got started in the fourth minute when Rivera scored off Click’s corner kick.
Vogt and Click followed with goals before Walkeradded one off an assist from Vogt.
Click scored yet again, this time on a corner kick, before Kylee Rojas ended first-half scoring on a penalty kick goal.
The second half saw Rivera pick up an assist on Click’s goal in the 54th minute before Vogt ended her night with a pair of penalty kicks.
After the busy week, KHS was 5-7 overall.
The Lady Jackets end their season Tuesday at Weatherford.
