Lady Jackets get defensive

Defense led to offense and yet another win for the Kingfisher Lady Jackets.

KHS forced 25 turnovers Tuesday as part of a 53-21 victory over Newcastle in the Lady Jackets’ home opener.

Kingfisher won its fourth straight game by scoring 22 points off those turnovers and never allowing the Lady Racers to get rolling offensively.

KHS scored the game’s first eight points and led 15-2 by the end of the first quarter.

Newcastle coach Nichole (Sanders) Copeland -who played on Kingfisher’s 1989 state championship team - was forced to call two timeouts in the opening minutes.

Her team was limited to 26 percent shooting (6 of 23).

KHS managed 19 more field goal attempts and shot at a better clip (48 percent).

The Lady Jackets nailed nine 3-pointers, three by senior guard Mya Dewberry.

She led the team along with Emily Myers in scoring nine points apiece.

Myers got all nine of hers in the second half.

Her younger sister, freshman Abbie Myers, sparked Kingfisher early. She came off the bench to score five points, grab three rebounds, hand out a pair of assists and lead the team with four steals.

Kadyn Daugherty also had five points and four steals.

Talor Mecklenburg and Peyton Walker added five points each. Walker also had five assists.

Raegan Snider poured in eight points while Addy Matthews scored seven.

KHS, ranked seventh in Class 4A, was 5-1 after the win.
