Cashion teams sweep Thomas, girls win in OT

Cashion let a big early lead slip away and then the same for a smaller one later in the game.

But in overtime, the Lady Wildcats got the job done.

Cashion outscored visiting Thomas 8-5 in the extra frame Tuesday to pull out a 51-47 victory.

Thomas senior Kyla Megli nailed a 3-pointer with 10 seconds left in regulation to knot the score at 43-43.

Cashion’s late effort to go ahead fell short, necessitating the overtime period.

Megli’s shot helped erase what was a four-point Cashion lead with 27.8 seconds left after Lauren Jenkins made a pair of free throws.

Madi Mannering pulled Thomas within two points with 19 seconds left, then Jenkins made one of two foul shots two seconds later to make it a three-point game and set up Megli’s shot.

In the extra frame, Cashion led by two with about 1:00 to play before Jenkins dribbled out much of the clock.

Megan Shafer was sent to the foul line and made both shots with 16 seconds to play for the final margin. Thomas was unable to score on the opposite end.

Overtime didn’t appear likely early as Cashion was up 21-5 early in the second quarter after a Madison Westerhoff 3-pointer.

But Thomas found its way back into it by outscoring Cashion 31-16 in the second half.

Westerhoff eventually led Cashion with 18 points.

Shafer scored 17 and Jenkins nine.

Megli paced Thomas with 17 points.

Cashion was 3-3 after the win.

Wildcats find shooting touch

The best shooting night of the early season resulted in Cashion’s best scoring output.

The Wildcats nailed 12 3-pointers Tuesday in disposing of visiting Thomas 79-50.

Cashion shot 12 of 29 (41 percent) just days after struggling for much of the tournament in Garber.

Chance Acord accounted for five of those treys as part of his game-high 23 points.

Drake Woody added three more to score all nine of his points while Kamden Miller knocked down a pair.

Caleb Shafer added 12 points and had six boards for Cashion, which out-rebounded the Terriers 38-24.

Cashion’s previous high-scoring game was 68 points against Newkirk last Saturday.

The Wildcats will enter the holiday break with a 4-2 record. They’re currently ranked 14th in Class 2A.
