Kingfisher ‘Caches’ in on early road trip
Kingfisher and Cache didn’t let potential weather affect them on Tuesday night.
Instead, they got out ahead of it on Monday.
KHS made the long trip to west of Lawton a day early and came home with a pair of Western Conference victories.
The Lady Jackets used a strong start to power their way to a 58-40 win.
The KHS boys shrugged off a sluggish start with a dominant third quarter en route to their own 77-33 triumph.
••• The “3” was the key for the KHS girls in the early going.
Peyton Walker hit three of Kingfisher’s four treys in the first quarter as they got out to a 14-5 lead.
The Lady Bulldogs started to find more offensive success in the second quarter, but Kingfisher never backed off.
Addy Matthews did much of her damage in the second when she scored 10 points.
It was Emily Myers’ turn in the second half.
The senior scored seven in each the third and fourth quarters.
Those different hot streaks led to Class 4A’s fourth-ranked Lady Jackets having three players in double figures.
Myers led the way with 16 points.
Matthews scored 13 and Walker finished with 12.
Aaliyah Young scored 22 points for Cache. She had 16 in the second half.
The victory was Kingfi sher’s fifth straight as it improved to 15-3 on the season. Cache dropped to 4-15. ••• Prior to Kingfisher’s game, it was revealed the Yellowjackets had returned to No. 1 in the final 4A rankings of the season.
Cache wasn’t impressed early, but KHS certainly looked the part late.
It wasn’t until late in the second quarter that Kingfisher began to pull away from the stubborn Bulldogs.
KHS turned a 12-10 lead after one quarter into a 3320 advantage by halftime.
The third quarter was complete domination.
The Jackets went on a 27-7 run to extend their lead to 33 points.
“We just didn’t start out very good,” Reese said. “It took our guys a while to get going.”
Drake Friesen scored seven points in the third quarter while Caden Kitchens and Jud Birdwell scored six apiece.
In the fourth - which was a 17-6 spurt by the Jackets - Friesen, Cash Slezickey, Xavier Ridenour and Maddox Jarvis all knocked down a 3-pointer.
Kitchens eventually led all scorers with 21 points.
He didn’t start slow as he scored half of Kingfisher’s points in the first quarter and had 15 by halftime.
Friesen finished his night with 15 points and a team-high five boards while Ridenour scored 10.
Slezickey and Birdwell poured in 10 apiece to give KHS five players in double figures. Slezickey also led the team with five assists.
The loss was Cache’s fourth straight as it dropped to 6-13.
KHS moved to 16-2 with its 11th straight win.
