KHS overwhelms Chisholm
Jackets sluggish at times, but have no problems in 56-6 victory
The game was never in doubt.
At certain points, the same can’t be said for Kingfi sher’s focus.
The Yellowjackets did, however, pay enough attention to hand the visiting Chisholm Longhorns a 56-6 defeat last Friday night.
“It was a good start, not so great in the middle, but then we did what we needed to do,” said KHS head coach Jeff Myers.
The win was Kingfisher’s second straight as it heads into an off week ahead of seven straight District 3A-1 games.
The rebuilding Longhorns didn’t figure to put up much of a fight and that appeared to be the case early.
KHS marched 59 yards on its opening drive and scored with 8:52 showing on the first quarter clock.
The Jackets scored again - both of them Dallen Barton runs - less than 90 seconds later.
On Chisholm’s next drive, KHS forced a punt, one that Harrison Evans blocked and recovered.
“It was exactly the kind of start we wanted and expected,” said Myers. “We made plays early and didn’t want to let them feel they could hang around.”
But that’s when Kingfisher’s lull made its first appearance.
The Jackets fumbled into the end zone, negating a chance to build on their lead. They fumbled on their next possession as well.
“ You have to give Chisholm some credit,” Myers said. “They continued to play hard and there were several times we didn’t match their intensity.”
Still, the Jackets were able to create some distance.
Jax Sternberger intercepted a pass to give KHS the ball at the Chisholm 36 late in the first quarter.
Cade Covalt got the call on a jet sweep a few plays later for a 4-yard touchdown reception.
A bad Chisholm punt put the Jackets at Chisholm’ 16 just a few minutes later.
Barton needed one snap to get his third rushing touchdown of the night.
That’s when Kingfisher’s second lull began.
The offense began to stall and Chisholm even managed to block a KHS punt with 40 seconds left in the half.
Although the defense held firm, Chisholm once again came out fiery in the third quarter.
The Longhorns marched 77 yards and scored on Kelson Hamilton’s 11-yard pass to Jackson Caddell.
Nearly four minutes into the third quarter, KHS had “just” a 28-6 lead (the extra-point was blocked).
“We had some things to clean up at halftime,” Myers said. “We let them know that and I feel like it sunk it, but it took a little longer than expected.”
The touchdown was Chisholm’s last highlight of the night.
The Jackets finally came alive again and scored 28 straight points by the end of the quarter.
Evans had multiple chain-moving receptions on Kingfisher’s ensuing 53yard touchdown drive, one that was capped by Sternberger’s 4-yard TD run.
The senior struck yet again on defense when he ran down Hamilton’s pass and returned his second interception of the night 47 yards for a score.
The Jackets had gone from 28-6 to 42-6 in a span of less than two minutes.
They weren’t done. The defense forced a turnover on downs and KHS needed just one play to see Aaron Delatorre scored on a 21-yard run.
After Ethan Waswo recovered a Chisholm fumble, Delatorre got his second score of the night, this one from 8 yards.
The offense proved quite balanced in production.
Sternberger was 10 of 18 through the air for 144 yards.
The team had 146 rushing yards on 30 attempts.
Barton totaled 48 on his 10 tries, three of which went for scores.
Delatorre ran for 44 yards, Blake Hill 20 and Ethan Karcher 15.
Evans was Sternberger’s most visited target as his four receptions covered 67 yards.
Paytun Burnham and Cade Covalt had two catches apiece.
Chisholm had just 173 total yards and five turnovers.
Tanner Parker and Evans led the team with nine tackles apiece.
Evans had three for a loss and Parker two more.
Delatorre had seven tackles.
On top of Sternberger’s two interceptions, Karcher and Waswo added one each.
“On paper, it looks really good. But on film, there are some things we are going to have to clean up,” Myers said.
“The good thing is, we’ve got a couple of weeks here to do it. We’ve got a chance to work on some things before the season that counts starts at Perkins.”
KHS returns to action Sept. 23 at Perkins-Tryon in the District 3A-1 opener.
