KHS girls put in overtime at homecoming
Yellowjacket defense shines to complete top 10 sweep
Nothing ever comes easy against Anadarko.
That was certainly the case for the Kingfisher Lady Jackets on Friday night.
It took two overtimes, but KHS did get the job done as it outlasted the Lady Warriors 43-36 in double-overtime on homecoming night at the APB.
Prior to the game, Emily Myers was announced as the homecoming queen and Xavier Ridenour the king.
The win was the latest Class 4A top-10 showdown against a Western Conference foe for the Lady Jackets.
Currently ranked No. 4 in the class, KHS has played No. 2 Tuttle, No. 3 Bethany, then-No. 4 Weatherford and Anadarko entered ranked seventh in the class.
And the Lady Warriors made Kingfisher earn it.
The game was tied after a quarter and at halftime.
The visitors led by entering the fourth quarter, but KHS had a chance to win it in regulation.
Kadyn Daugherty put the Lady Jackets on top 3432 with a pair of free throws with 1:37 to play.
Mya Dewberry’s steal ended Anadarko’s possession on the other end and KHS eventually ran the clock down to 18.6 seconds before Peyton Walker was fouled.
The junior made the first of two free throws, but missed the second.
Anadarko capitalized as Heaven Haywood buried a corner 3-pointer with 11.9 seconds to play to tie the game.
KHS had a chance to win it, but couldn’t convert in the waning moments.
The teams both scored just one point in the first overtime, but, again, Kingfi sher had the final possession.
Walker was denied on her drive and the second extra frame was needed.
Just over 30 seconds into that second overtime, Addy Matthews found a gash in Anadarko’s defense and scored on a drive down the left side.
That put KHS up 38-36 and proved the only points necessary.
For good measure, Walker went 5 of 6 from the free throw line to ice the game.
Anadarko managed just one point in the two overtimes.
Walker led all scorers with 15 points.
Her first nine points were all on 3-pointers.
Raegan Snider and Matthews scored seven apiece while Dewberry netted seven.
As a team, KHS shot 19 of 23 from the free throw line. Anadarko was 8 of 14.
The win put the Lady Jackets at 14-3 on the season. They are 5-2 in conference games.
Jacket defense smothers Warriors
Braylon Owens gave Anadarko an early 3-0 lead against Kingfisher.
The good news essentially stopped there for the Warriors.
KHS pushed its home win streak to 80 games Friday night with a 50-27 victory against Anadarko at the APB.
The Jackets’ Cash Slezickey responded to Owens’ 3-pointer with one of his own, sparking a 12-0 run by the Jackets.
The visitors never got closer than six points again in the first half and never got it within single digits in the second two quarters.
As expected, the game was a grind as both teams excelled on the defensive end.
KHS took just 23 field goal attempts, one more than the Warriors.
The Jackets were 5 of 12 from 3-point range, three of them coming in that first quarter.
Xavier Ridenour and Caden Kitchens each knocked down a trey as part of the early run.
But Kitchens was also saddled with foul trouble.
He picked up a third foul in the second quarter and played just 13 minutes in the game.
He still finished with eight points.
The scoring load fell to Ridenour.
The senior responded with 15 points in the first half.
He finished with 17 and a team-high four rebounds.
Drake Friesen also scored eight points while Slezickey finished with seven.
The Jackets were 21 of 26 from the free throw line, including 11 of 12 in the fourth quarter.
Anadarko was 8 of 14 and was limited to 36 percent shooting from the floor.
KHS has now won 10 in a row and is 15-2 overall. The Jackets are 7-0 in Western Conference games.
