Kamas finishes strong to claim OJGT championship
Even rust from a few weeks off couldn’t keep Maddi Kamas from the Tour Championship title of the Oklahoma Junior Golf Tour.
Kamas shot a final-round 1-under-par 70 Sunday at Shawnee Country Club to claim the season-ending tournament title by two strokes with a two-day total of 144.
The Kingfisher High School junior was in a three-way tie for first after Saturday’s initial round.
After struggling with three bogeys to close the round, Kamas finished with a 74 to pair her with Hanna Hawks of Wellington, Kan., and Emily Miller of Edmond on the final day.
Kamas started Sunday’s round with a birdie, but bogeyed the next two holes.
She carded four straight pars before finishing the front-nine with a birdie and bogey.
The back-nine was much more consistent as Kamas started it with three pars before a birdie on No. 13.
With the tournament title still in the balance, Kamas sunk a 12-foot birdie putt on No. 17 to build a cushion.
Hawks finished second with a 146 and Miller was third with 152.
Kamas also wrapped up the 2019 season as the winner of the Kyle Lewis Stroke Average Award.
Kamas had a stroke average of 71.8 for the season. Raychel Nelke was second at 74.4.
Kamas earned 1,225 points for the OJGT season, also tops among girls.
Miller was second with 1,177.
She’ll now compete with other top OJGT players in the Red River Team Cup Challenge.
Members from the OJGT will take on members of the Texas Junior Golf Tour and select players from Zona del Norte in Mexico in this two-day tournament.
It will be played Oct. 19-20 at Dornick Hills Country Club in Ardmore.
