JH squads shine at Western Conference

Jackets 3rd, Cashion 4th and Hennessey 8th at two-day tournament

All four Kingfisher County teams provided strong showings over the weekend in the junior high division of the Western Conference Wrestling Tournament.

Kingfisher placed third, Cashion was right behind in fourth and Hennessey was seventh in the two-day tournament held at the APB. There were 27 teams represented at the tournament and 23 of them scored points.

The Jackets were led by Channing Dunn, who not only won the 126-pound weight class, but was also named the Outstanding Wrestler.

Dunn went 4-0 in his matches with the first three of them not making it out of the first period.

He pinned Bradley Ross of Geary in 39 seconds and then Haydon Eller of Newkirk in 52 seconds, the latter of which was the quarterfinal.

In the semifinal, Dunn needed 1:27 to pin Nate Poindexter of Cashion.

That pitted him against Tommy White of Anadarko in the championship bout.

Dunn out-classed White and earned a 13-2 major decision for the gold medal.

He scored 29 total points out of Kingfisher’s 129.5.

Cache easily won the team title with 189.5 points while Weatherford was the runner-up with 139.

Dunn was one of six Jackets to place, but the only one to reach the finals. Cohen Wallace was fourth at 86 pounds and Kaden Willms at 119 pounds.

Both wrestlers went 4-2 in their respective weight classes.

Steel Snodgrass placed fifth at 112 pounds.

Snodgrass lost his quarterfi nal, but came back to win three of four matches for fifth. He was 5-2 overall.

Chance Dunn went 3-3 and placed sixth at 140 pounds for the Jackets.

Wildcats place 7

Cashion had seven grapplers who placed as the team scored 128 total points.

Cameron Billen made it all the way to the 285-pound final, but had to settle for silver after being beaten by Andrew Willard of Weatherford.

Hayden Norrell took the long way to the bronze medal at 106 pounds.

Norrell lost his second- round match, but came back to win six consecutive matches for third.

He pinned each of those last six foes, including Van Gulledge of Oklahoma Christian School in the third-place match.

Houston Jerry went 4-2 to take fourth at 155 pounds.

Tanner Poindexter (86 pounds), Andrew Stockton (119) and Daniel Davis (195) each placed fifth in their classes while Nate Poindexter (126) was sixth.

Gonzalez wins gold for Hennessey

Hennessey had four placers, including one gold medalist, en route to 101 team points.

Mauricio Gonzalez toppled the field at 119 pounds, pinning all five of his foes.

He needed a combined 59 seconds to beat Drake Stewart of Newkirk and Madden Nolan of Hobart.

He pinned Chakobie Washa of Weatherford in 3:29 of their quarterfinal then Kaden Willms of Kingfisher at 4:38 of their semifinal.

In the title match, Gonzalez used just 36 seconds to pin Victor Morales of Cache.

Jameson Ladwig made his way to the 155 pound championship, but was defeated by Zane Entz of Hinton.

On his way to silver, Ladwig pinned Oliver Moyeda of Kingfisher, Trintton Koontz of Elk City, Dub Montgomery of Hobart and Lucius Fragua of Anadarko.

Rogan Choate went 4-1 in his matches and was able to claim bronze at 126 pounds while Raiden Briley was fourth at 285.
