Hennessey doubles up over the weekend

Hennessey was able to break its string of narrow defeats…only for the joy to be temporary.

The Eagles visited Perry last Friday and came home with a 47-34 victory.

It snapped a four-game skid, the last three of which were by a total of 10 points.

But the narrow-loss bug bit again Saturday when Fairview took home a 5453 victory from the Eagle Event Center.

The Yellowjacket lead was double digits in the second half and still held up at 53-46 when Hadden Miller made two free throws with 4:58 left.

Hennessey mounted its comeback as Beau Vinson scored a minute later and then Hagen Copeland buried a 3-pointer with 1:43 left.

That pulled the Eagles within 53-51.

After getting a defensive stop, Hennessey had a chance to tie, but Camdyn Richardson missed the first of two free throws.

His make on the second attempt got the Eagles within a point.

Fairview got its lone point in the final 4:58 with a free throw with 44.6 seconds left.

Richardson was again fouled with 26.2 seconds remaining, but again missed his first attempt.

The Eagles got yet another late chance to win after Fairview missed two free throws with 19.8 seconds left, but a late 3-point attempt was off the mark.

Richardson’s two missed free throws were his only in the game on his 11 attempts.

He led all scorers with 25 points.

Copeland added 14 and Vinson scored 10.

After a slow start against Perry, Hennessey used a 17-4 run in the second quarter to begin to pull away.

Copeland scored eight points in the frame and added six more in the third as the Eagles increased their lead to 19 points.

The freshman scored a game-high 21 points.

Richardson finished with 15.

The Eagles entered this week with a 10-12 record.

Lady Eagles run out of gas against Jackets

As Brian Richardson put it, the Hennessey Lady Eagles just didn’t have enough gas in the tank.

The Hennessey coach was talking about Saturday’s 57-31 home loss to Three Rivers Conference foe Fairview at the Eagle Event Center.

That afternoon game came after Hennessey won 48-30 Friday night in Perry.

In that win, the Lady Eagles outscored Perry 23-9 in the middle two quarters to extend their lead to 18 points.

Katie Kennedy played her role in that with 11 points in the middle two frames.

She finished the night with 17.

Emma Copeland added 10 points while Ally Painter scored eight.

Hours later, Fairview jumped on Hennessey early with a 17-7 lead.

The 18th-ranked team in 2A got eight of Josi Hayes’ 18 points in that first quarter.

Up by 11 at the half, Fairview didn’t let Hennessey dream of a comeback as Harlee Hamar came alive for 15 of her game-high 19 points.

Emily Goff led the Lady Eagles with her eight points.

Kennedy scored seven and Painter six.

Hennessey was 14-8 after the loss. The Lady Eagles wrapped up their Three Rivers Conference play with a 4-3 mark.
