Hammon upends Lady Raiders in Warrior Classic showdown
Lomega boys take 3rd
Hammon posed a big problem for Lomega.
Her name is Henley West.
The 6-foot-4 sophomore played to her stature Saturday as she led her thirdranked Lady Warriors to a 66-55 win over No. 1 Lomega in the finals of the Warriors Classic.
West scored 28 points in the title game as Hammon ended the Lady Raiders’ 13-game win streak to start the season.
“They played really well,” said Lomega coach Kevin Lewallen of Hammon. “But we didn’t play with enough effort on the boards…didn’t block them out.”
Despite early foul troubles, Lomega was within 33-31 of Hammon at halftime.
The Lady Raiders’ were in that position due in part to Abby Swart burying four second-quarter 3-pointers.
But Hammon outscored Lomega 33-24 in the second half.
West and eventual tournament MVP Maylee Chaney combined for 28 of those second-half points.
They had a combined 13 in the fourth quarter to help hold off the Lady Raiders.
Hammon was 8 of 10 from the free throw line in the fourth and 16 of 18 for the game.
Lomega attempted five free throws.
“That was a big part, too,” Lewallen said. “Free throws played a huge role in the game.”
Four Lomega starters had at least three fouls in the game.
Darcy Roberts was among those having early foul issues.
She came back to score seven in the third quarter and finished with 13 points.
Swart scored 19 to lead the team.
Both were named all-tournament team members.
Sydni Walker added 11 for the Lady Raiders and Hadley Ott scored eight.
Chaney scored 22 for Hammon (15-1).
“She was really good for them,” Lewallen added.
Lomega held West to just two first-quarter points, but Chaney scored six. Walker and Roberts each had four early points as the teams were tied 11-11 after a quarter.
Walker also scored 11 in Lomega’s 57-23 win over Sentinel in the semifinals.
Swart scored 11 of her team-high 17 in the first quarter, including a trio of 3-pointers.
Roberts added 13 points.
Raiders topple Erick for third place
The third quarter was the big difference for Lomega in both a win and a loss at the Hammon Warrior Classic.
The Raiders outscored Erick 24-6 in that stanza on Saturday en route to pulling away for a 65-40 victory in the boys’ thirdplace game.
They were sent to the consolation side of the bracket with Friday’s 72-66 defeat to Class A’s 20thranked Shattuck.
The Indians caught fire in the third quarter and outscored Lomega 28-14.
The Raiders hit four treys in the fourth and tightened what was a 14-point gap, but couldn’t close it.
Ben Marsh hit two of those 3-pointers and finished with 10 points.
The Raiders were led by Lance Yost’s 19 points.
They also got 14 from Chase Burton and 12 from Owen Duffy.
Both teams made 12 3-pointers in the contest. Burton made four for the Raiders while Yost and Brooks Uhlenhake (nine points) buried three apiece.
Lomega came back Saturday to make nine more.
Burton again made four, including two in the decisive third quarter.
He scored nine points in the frame as Lomega turned what was a six-point lead into a 59-35 advantage.
Yost scored eight of his 16 points in the third and was later named to the all-tournament team.
Marsh added 10 points as the Raiders improved to 10-4.
