Dover girls knock off Earlsboro for 3rd
Dover coach Matt Peck knew a championship at the Jim Walling Invitational tournament in Earlsboro was a long shot.
Still, it offered the opportunity to garner at least one quality win.
The Lady Longhorns got just that on Saturday as they beat Class B No. 13 Earlsboro 47-40 on its home court to take third place.
“Hopefully that will give us a bump in the rankings,” said Peck.
His Dover squad entered the game ranked No. 16 in the class.
The Lady Longhorns were coming off a 50-20 defeat to Class A No. 4 Vanoss in Friday’s semifinal.
“They’re a good team, but I didn’t feel like we competed the way we needed to,” Peck said of the loss.
The Lady Longhorns responded much better on Saturday.
Rylee Buck knocked down a pair of 3-pointers and Karlee Harviston scored seven points as Dover got out to a 17-8 first-quarter lead.
It didn’t give it up. The advantage extended to 28-15 by halftime.
Dover took an 11-point lead into the fourth and although they weren’t great at the foul line, the Lady Longhorns were good enough.
Dover went 8 of 15 down the stretch to help seal the win.
Katelyn Harviston was 6 of 8 in the fourth and made her last five attempts.
She finished with 13 points.
Karlee Harviston led the team with 14 while Buck scored 12.
The Lady Longhorns were 12-4 after the victory.
The win bumped them up to No. 13 in this week’s rankings, one spot ahead of Earlsboro.
Of the four teams to beat Dover, Drummond is the only one not in the top-five of its class.
Dover’s boys lost its only two games in the tournament.
After opening with a 67-27 defeat to Kinta, they were knocked off 61-46 by Wilson in the consolation semifinals.
The tournament didn’t offer seventh- place games.
