Goodwin, Covalt deliver, but KHS dealt loss
Zach Goodwin led off the bottom of the first inning with a home run and had another productive day of offense, but it wasn’t enough to lift Kingfisher to a win on Senior Night.
Weatherford scored five runs in the final two innings Thursday to knock off the Jackets 7-3 at Homier Field.
The loss had no bearing on Kingfisher’s postseason, but it was the Jackets’ third loss in four games after losing just twice in its first 28 tries.
Cooper Covalt gave the Jackets a solid start on the mound as he gave up two runs and one hit over five innings and left with the game tied.
It didn’t stay that way, however, as Weatherford got to reliever Chase Gustafson for four sixth-inning runs.
Goodwin helped try to bring KHS back in the bottom of the seventh when he walked and later scored on Keaton Abercrombie’s sacrifice fly, but that was all the offense that could be mustered.
Goodwin finished 2 of 3 with two runs scored and an RBI.
He gave the Jackets a 1-0 lead when he sent the first pitch he saw over the left-center field wall.
The Eagles scored twice in the second, but KHS tied it in the bottom half when Gustafson singled and later scored.
He also had two hits in the game.
KHS, 27-5, played at Stillwater Friday (after press time) and hosted Mount St. Mary Saturday before traveling to Piedmont Monday.
The 4A regional tournament, hosted by KHS, begins Thursday.
