Gilles, zone lead KHS to victory at Clinton
Kingfisher’s Coleman Gilles and Clinton’s Atticus Thompson both scored a majority of their team’s points.
Gilles had more points… and more help.
His team, therefore, got the win.
The Jackets dominated a 12-minute stretch of the second half Friday to help earn a 33-25 win at Clinton’s Tornado Dome.
Down 15-13 at halftime, the Jackets scored four quick points to start the second half - both buckets by Gilles - and didn’t allow the Reds a field goal until just over 5:15 remained in the game.
After outscoring Clinton 9-1 in the third quarter, the Jackets pushed their lead to 10 points on a Matthew Mecklenburg 3-pointer in the fourth.
The Reds were an efficient 7 of 12 from the field (58 percent) in the first half, but Kingfisher switched to a zone beginning in the third.
It worked as it limited Clinton to 3 of 15 (33 percent) shooting over the final two quarters. After scoring 12 points in the paint in the first half, Clinton only had four the rest of the night.
Gilles had eight of Kingfisher’s points in that third-quarter run.
He ended his night with 19 and also had a team-high 10 rebounds and five steals.
Jhett Birdwell and Jake Reagan scored five apiece.
Thompson scored 14 for the Reds.
He had 10 at halftime and was held scoreless in the third quarter.
With the win, KHS moved to 6-14 on the season.
