Dominant second half spurs Dover boys to win
Dover switched to a zone and Joriaun Caldwell was in a scoring zone as the Longhorns opened their season with a win.
Caldwell scored 30 points Tuesday as Dover went on the road to defeat Cimarron 50-30.
Tied at the half, the Longhorns surrendered just 10 second-half points.
It was due in part to a defensive ploy started in the second quarter.
Dover started in a manto-man defense and fell behind 11-8.
“We went with a 1-3-1 in the second quarter,” said coach Aaron Norton who is starting his second season with the Longhorns.
Dover limited the Blazers to nine points in the quarter and managed to tie it before going on a 10-3 run in the third.
Caldwell scored 16 of his points in the first half, but his teammates managed only four.
Their production increased four-fold in the second half.
Kasen Harviston scored all seven of his points in the final quarter as Dover closed with a 20-7 spurt.
Emory Norton finished his day with six points.
Lady Longhorns fall
Scoring woes kept Brett Pitts from notching one in the win column in his return to Dover.
Pitts’ Lady Longhorns were defeated 41-28 by Cimarron.
“We saw some good things,” Pitts said. “But we also made some mistakes that are just going to take experience to get through.”
Dover fell behind 11-2 early and spent much of the next two quarters climbing out of the deficit.
The Lady Longhorns tied it at one point in the third, but Cimarron eventually pulled away.
Hope Caldwell paced the team with 15 points, but was the only Dover player in double figures.
Katelyn Harviston scored all six of her points in the second half.
