Playoffs? Elk City win make them probable for KHS boys

Kingfisher’s win against Elk City last week may have locked up its second-ever soccer playoff berth.

The Yellowjackets dealt the Elks a 4A-2 defeat at home. Although they followed it up Tuesday with a 4-0 loss to Southeast, the Jackets are sitting at 2-2 in District 4-2, currently good for third place.

KHS wraps up its district season with games on Friday (after press time) against Woodward and then next Thursday against John Marshall.

The game against Woodward appears to be the pivotal one. The Boomers are currently in second place, though Weatherford is expected to make a surge to that spot with its remaining district slate.

If the Jackets can defeat Woodward, it creates a potential for a logjam for the second spot in the district behind Southeast.

KHS got on top of Elk City early when Omar Casillas scored just five minutes in.

After the Elks tied it up in the 21st minute, the Jackets rattled off three straight goals.

Alan Munoz gave them the lead for good in the 34th minute on a feed from Charlie Saucedo.

Munoz then made it 3-1 just a minute into the second half thanks to an assist from Aryan Haro.

Ali Padilla capped Kingfisher’s scoring in the 55th minute with an assist from Zarek Pickle.

Jose Marquez collected 18 assists.

Marquez was perhaps more impressive in defeat against Southeast.

The junior collected 30 saves.

“He was under a lot of pressure all night,” coach Fay Barnett said. “That was probably his best game of the season.”

Southeast improved to 9-1 overall and 4-0 in the district with its win.

The Jackets were 3-8 overall after the defeat.

Lady Jackets split games

Maitland Pickle scored two goals and Paige Yeoman recorded a shutout last Tuesday as the Kingfisher girls soccer team picked up a key district win.

The Lady Jackets knocked off Southeast 3-0 to improve to 5-5 overall and 2-2 in District 4A-2.

That mark currently has the Lady Jackets in fifth place, but two of their three remaining games are against teams ahead of them in the standings.

“We played one of our worst games of the season last Friday, but came back Tuesday with one of our best,” KHS soccer coach Fay Barnett said.

The “worst” game was a 3-0 defeat to Elk City.

Yeoman had 19 saves and had KHS in it before the Elkettes scored two late goals to pull away.

She got some offensive help against Southeast.

Emma Barnett scored just 11 minutes into the game off an assist from Chelsea Johnson.

Pickle pushed it to 2-0 with a goal in the 23rd minute. It was assisted by Kaci Jackson.

Johnson got her second assist on Pickle’s second goal with just three minutes remaining for the 3-0 advantage.

Yeoman had 11 saves in this contest.

The Lady Jackets hosted Woodward Friday (after press time), Crossings Christian Tuesday and John Marshall Thursday.

Crossings was third in the district and Woodward fourth at press time.
