Green named region’s top male athlete
Blundell, Reese, Combs also honored by OCA
Kingfisher High School racked up a number of honors at Thursday’s Region 1 meeting of the Oklahoma Coaches Association.
Senior Trey Green was voted the Region 1 Male Athlete of the Year after a poll of coaches and athletic directors.
Region 1 covers 76 school districts in northwest Oklahoma. It covers Cimarron, Texas, Beaver, Harper, Woods, Alfalfa, Grant, Garfield, Logan, Canadian, Kingfisher, Blaine, Major, Custer, Dewey, Woodward and Ellis counties.
Green was the leading scorer on Kingfisher’s Class 4A boys state championship basketball team.
The Jackets went 28-1 and won their second title in three years with him averaging a team-high 16.3 points. He also pulled down 5.1 rebounds and had 2.6 assists a game while shooting 56 percent.
Green, who has signed to play at Oklahoma Baptist University, will be awarded a $500 scholarship with the honor.
Two of his coaches were also recognized at the meeting.
Jared Reese was named the region’s boys basketball coach of the year and Chris Combs the assistant coach of the year.
Reese just completed his sixth season at KHS, the last three of which have ended in the state championship game.
Combs has been Reese’s assistant the past four seasons, during which KHS has won 103 games.
Stan Blundell was also named the region’s baseball coach of the year.
The Yellowjackets are currently 23-2 and have win streaks of nine and 14 games this season.
KHS also sits atop District 4A-2 with a 6-0 record.
