KHS wins Edward Jones
Cole Crosswhite quieted Piedmont’s bats to bring Kingfisher another Edward Jones Invitational championship.
Crosswhite shutout the Wildcats in an 8-0 KHS win at Homier Field in Saturday’s championship game that ended three days of action at two sites.
Piedmont entered the day on a 10-game win streak and had scored 12, 11 and eight runs in its three previous games of the tournament.
However, Crosswhite scattered six hits and five walks while striking out four before the Jackets got the six-inning run-rule win.
The game ended in the bottom half of that inning when Ian Daugherty walked with the bases loaded.
The Jackets got all the necessary run support in the second inning when Logan Rutledge knocked in two runs with a double and later scored on a wild pitch as part of a four-run frame.
The Jackets added three runs on a pair of Piedmont errors and then an RBI single by Crosswhite to extend the lead to 7-0 in the fourth.
Cade Stephenson had two of Kingfisher’s seven hits and scored twice in the win.
The Jackets had to work some late magic Friday night to land in the championship game.
Keaton Abercrombie’s sacrifice bunt was good enough for two runs to score in the bottom of the sixth inning as KHS squeezed out a 9-7 win over Durant.
The Jackets trailed the Lions 7-5 in the fourth when Daugherty reached on a two-out error to score Zach Goodwin. Daugherty tied the game on Abercrombie’s RBI single.
In the sixth, Crosswhite led off with a single and Daugherty walked.
The two eventually advanced and then scored on Abercrombie’s bunt.
Cooper Covalt pitched three innings of scoreless relief for the win. He struck out four batters and gave up just two hits.
Rutledge drove in three runs while Clayton Abercrombie added two RBIs and Daugherty scored three times.
KHS also had wins of 19-5 over Guthrie and 7-1 against Vici in the tournament.
Gustafson pitched all seven innings against the Indians while Crosswhite had three hits and scored three times to go with an RBI.
KHS pounded out 14 hits against Guthrie to open the tournament Thursday.
Rutledge had three of them and drove in two runs. Seven other Jackets also had two RBIs.
Keaton Abercrombie pitched all four innings in the run-rule victory. Four of the runs he surrendered were earned as he struck out four batters.
