KHS rolls on homecoming night

Five different players scored touchdowns as Kingfisher officially began its quest for the playoffs.

The Jackets scored the game’s first 42 points Friday before cruising to a 58-26 homecoming victory against Bridge Creek.

It was the District 3A-1 opener for both teams as KHS improved to 3-1 overall.

“I thought we came out early and took care of business, which is want you want to do in a game like this,” head coach Jeff Myers said.

“Homecoming week can offer a lot of distractions, but we played like this game had our focus.”

Bridge Creek entered the game with a 1-2 record and went without an offensive score in its first two games of the season.

The Bobcats didn’t managed positive total yardage until their final drive of the first half.

That’s when Reagan Palmer broke off a 60-yard touchdown run.

However, KHS had already put the ball into the end zone six times before that play.

Three of those touchdowns were on the ground.

Alan Muñoz, who was crowned homecoming captain while Isabella Meza was crowned queen before the game, capped a 73-yard game-opening drive with a 2-yard scoring run.

Jax Sternberger punched it in from a yard out late in the first quarter for a 13-0 lead.

That led to a 32-point second quarter by the Jackets that included an 18-yard scoring run by Muñoz.

That TD made it 42-0 with 2:14 left in the first half.

It was preceded by a pair of Slade Snodgrass touchdown grabs from Sternberger.

One was a 34-yarder on the first play of the second quarter as KHS went up 21-0.

The next was a 39-yard snag with 8:04 to play in the half for a 28-0 lead.

Snodgrass set up the second Muñoz TD with a 65-yard punt return.

Both of those plays were preceded by a special teams touchdown.

Junior Harrison Evans got his left paw on a Jason Linn punt, scooped it off the bounce and rolled into the end zone for a 35-0 lead with 5:59 to play in the first half.

“We got to them in a lot of ways,” said Myers. “Our offense produced a lot of yards and our defense wasn’t giving up anything and then our special teams also put points on the board.”

Bridge Creek was without a first down and had minus-20 yards of offense before it finally scored near the end of the half.

However, the Jackets secured halftime momentum when Cade Covalt hauled in a pair of long passes to help put KHS in field goal range.

Muñoz booted a 20-yard field goal on the final play of the half.

Covalt had four receptions for 95 yards, all in the first half.

In fact, that’s where the Jackets got a majority of their production as they coasted through a large portion of the second half.

Of the Jackets’ 388 yards, all but 70 were in the first half.

Sternberger was responsible for a lot of that.

He was 10 of 12 passing for 188 yards, two TDs and no turnovers.

He added another 91 yards and two rushing touchdowns, including a 22-yard scamper in the third quarter.

Muñoz totaled 73 yards with his 13 carries while Cade Cooper had 39 yards on seven attempts.

Cooper gave the Jackets their final TD on a 23-yard run with 54 seconds left in the third.

Snodgrass, whose two catches covered 73 yards, added four tackles, 122 total returns yards and a fumble recovery to his night.

Jake Reagan led the team with seven tackles. Two were for a loss.

Evans finished with six tackles.

It was Kingfisher’s first home game since the opener almost a month prior.

The Jackets hit the road again this week when they travel to Douglass. (Note: By order of Oklahoma City Public Schools, masks will be required for all in attendance.)

The Trojans are also 3-1 overall and 1-0 in the district.

They defeated Mount St. Mary 14-13 on Friday.

Other wins have come against Star Spencer (34- 12) and Northwest Classen (59-0) while the Trojans were defeated by Millwood (27-7) in Week 2.

Kingfisher’s next home game is Oct. 8 when it hosts McLoud.
