Cashion finishes 2nd in 2A boys golf team race

It didn’t take long for Cashion to make its mark in the golf world.

In just the program’s fifth year, the Wildcat boys team finished as the Class 2A state runner-up last week at Earlywine Golf Course.

The Wildcats shot rounds of 328 and 322 Monday and finished with a 336 Tuesday.

Their 986 was bested only by Walters.

The Blue Devils won in dominant fashion with scores of 307, 319 and 323.

Latta took third with a 989 and Perry was fourth at 992.

The finish in golf only mirrored what the other boys programs have done at Cashion this season.

Football and powerlifting won state titles. Basketball and baseball also reached the state tournament.

Golf might have been the biggest surprise.

“I knew we had some good golfers, but I wasn’t sure how we stacked up against everyone else in the state,” coach Erik Robinson said.

Turns out the Wildcats stacked up well thanks to their consistency of scores.

Only one Cashion golfer finished among the top-20 individually, but all were in the top-45.

Holton Aaron had rounds of 83 and 82 Monday then closed strong with a 79. His 244 placed him 19th.

Camden Maroney, also on the baseball team that played at state last week, had rounds of 80, 78 and 90.

His 248 tied him at 26th with teammate Patrick Sexton who shot 83, 81 and 84. Right behind them at

249 was yet another Wildcat, Jake Wilkerson.

He carded scores of 82, 81 and 86.

Max Brown was 43rd out of 74 golfers with his 265. He ran two days earlier in the Class 2A state track meet.

He fired off rounds of 90, 88 and 87.

All that, said Robinson, made his job easy.

“I just drove around and made sure they had water and snacks,” he said, laughing.

“But to be state runner-up in only the fifth year of the program is really exciting for us.”

Crescent, led by individual state champ Dominic Stevens (see related story), placed eighth as a team.

Individually, Hennessey’s Christian Tovar tied for 40th with his threeround total of 260.
