Gerrett Spears prefers this year’s path through the playoffs over his first trek with the Lady Jackets.

Kingfisher held off a late Dickson rally on Thursday to gain a 57-50 victory in their Class 4A regional semifinal at the APB.

The win advanced KHS to Saturday’s regional championship, a game in it No. 4 Weatherford.

It also ensures Kingfisher’s spot in this week’s area tournament at Enid High School.

Last year’s spot in area wasn’t secured until the last day of the regional, one in which KHS had to win three straight elimination games after being upset by Elk City in a district.

Ironically, Elk City visited Kingfisher for district again this year, but no upset took play.

KHS dispatched the Elkettes 58-35 on Tuesday.

After a slow start, Kingfisher went on a 25-8 run in the second quarter to begin to pull away.

Emily Myers was the only Lady Jacket in double figures as she had 12 points and nine rebounds.

However, Kate Henderson and Allison Green scored nine apiece. Ally Stephenson added eight and Britt Taylor and Addy Matthews scored seven each.

The scoring was again balanced against Dickson, but this time it was a third-quarter spurt that broke the

Up 23-18 at halftime, Kingfisher went on a 26-9 run in the third.

Scoreless in the firsthalf, Emily Myers scored quickly to open the second half while drawing the fourth foul on Dickson’s Audrey Young.

Ally Stephenson and Peyton Walker scored six apiece in the quarter as Kingfisher frustrated Dickson on both ends of the court.

Trailing big to start the fourth, Dickson didn’t quit.

The Lady Comets took advantage of their size and went inside.

They opened the fourth with a 12-2 run and continued to cut into Kingfisher’s lead.

It got to single digits late before Myers found Taylor with a long pass from underneath the Dickson basket. Taylor finished on the other end for a 55-44 advantage with 1:44 to play.

Dickson continued to score, but never truly threatened the full comeback.

The Lady Comets scored 36 points in the paint, 16 of them in the fourth quarter.

But Kingfisher also forced 30 turnovers, which included six steals by Walker who had, perhaps, her best overall game of the season.

The freshman also ended her night with 13 points, three rebounds and two assists. She also had four more deflections on top of the steals.

Myers scored all 14 of her team-high points in the second half. She also led the team with five assists.

Stephenson scored 11 points and Taylor 10.
