Cashion takes down No.1 Dale in 20T
Raney leads scoring effort, Jenkins knocks down clinching free throws
No. 1 went down Tuesday, but could get its rematch this week.
Cashion went on the road Thursday and shocked Class 2A’s top-ranked Dale in a 60-59 double-overtime thriller.
Jonah Jenkins made 5 of 6 free throws in the final minute to help the fifthranked Wildcats preserve the lead.
That included two foul shots with six seconds left to put Cashion ahead 60-56, making a 3-pointer by Dayton Forsythe at the buzzer meaningless.
It was Dale’s first loss of the season while Cashion improved to 10-1.
Dale is the top seed and the Wildcats the second in the Cashion County Line Tournament that begins Thursday, making way for a potential rematch on Saturday.
“The tournament is way too tough to predict who’s going to be playing for what on Saturday, but there’s always the potential,” Cash-ion coach John Hardaway said.
The tournament also features Class B No. 1 Varnum, Class A No. 8 Vanoss and 3A’s 17th-ranked Oklahoma Christian School among others.
Dale had a chance to ice the game in regulation when freshman standout Dayton Forsythe stepped to the line with 11 seconds remaining and his team up two.
However, Forsythe missed the front end of a one-and-one, giving Cashion hope.
The Wildcats made good on it as Jenkins pushed it up the court and found Austin Frazier, who laid it off the glass to tie the game with two seconds left, forcing overtime.
With only seconds left in the first extra frame, Cashion’s Trey Tichenor missed a 3-pointer with only seconds left that would have given his team the win.
Cashion controlled much of the second extra period. It went up 55-52 with Vance Raney’s two free throws with 2:20 to play.
Dale got within one, but never tied or took the lead again.
Raney led the Wildcats with 22 points, which included going 6 of 9 from 3-point range.
Jenkins scored 16 and had eight assists.
Frazier added 10 points and seven boards.
Dale got out to a 10-1 lead before Cashion pulled within four points by the end of the first quarter.
The Pirates surged again in the second before Hardaway switched to a zone, which it ran into the third period.
“That really slowed them down starting in the second quarter, then we started making our own shots in the third,” he said.
Cashion outscored Dale 14-4 in the third.
Forsythe led his team with 25 points and nine rebounds.
No. 1 Dale girls overcome Cashion’s fast start
The Cashion girls attempted to start the night off with an upset, but No. 1 Dale eventually prevailed 54-33.
The visitors led 14-11 after a quarter as they handled Dale’s pressure.
But the hosts starting knocking down shots and outscored Cashion 37-16 over the middle two quarters.
Dale held No. 12 Cashion to just 10 second-half points.
Danyn Lang led Dale with 16 points.
Cashion got 11 points from Lauren Jenkins and eight from Issy Reeves.
The loss dropped Cashion to 7-4. Dale was 8-1 after the win.
