Kamas claims OJGT Kickingbird title
Chalk up another win for Maddi Kamas.
The state’s top junior female golfer stormed from behind Sunday to win the Oklahoma Junior Golf Tour’s Kickingbird Fall Challenge by four strokes.
Kamas shot a 2-under-par 68 in Sunday’s second round for a two-day total of 141.
That distanced her from runner-up Olivia Coit, one of two golfers who entered the day with a lead over Kamas.
Coit shot 72 Saturday while fellow Edmondite Lilly Whitley led the tournament with a 71. Kamas was one of two
Kamas was one of two golfers to shoot a 3-over 73 as she was joined by Jenna Triplett of Edmond.
A senior at Kingfisher High School, Kamas was without a birdie Saturday. She managed 16 pars, bogeyed No. 3 and double-bogeyed 12.
Then she started Sunday with a bogey on the first hole.
Sitting at 1-over for her round through three holes, Kamas quickly took command of the tournament.
She birdied the next two holes and grabbed two more on the seventh and ninth holes.
That gave her a 3-under 32 at the turn.
Kamas slipped up on 15 and 16 with back-to-back bogeys, but answered with a birdie on 17.
Coit shot 73 Sunday.
Whitley fell back with a 75 and was tied for third along with Wichita’s Kate Tilma.
Triplett fell back to sixth with a Sunday 75 and was seven strokes back of Kamas. Jenks’ Jenni Roller took sixth with a 147 total.
This was the third tournament of the OJGT’s fall series, but the first in which Kamas has competed.
The victory, though, vaulted her into a tie for fourth with Whitley in the series standings.
Kamas is the only golfer among the top-five in the point standings to not have played in multiple fall tournaments yet.
