Lady Jackets advance

A third consecutive trip to the area tournament is in store for the Kingfisher girls basketball team.

The Lady Jackets earned that right Saturday afternoon with a 51-42 win over Elk City in their 4A regional consolation championship at the APB.

After falling behind 11-5, KHS closed the first half with a 12-0 run and then rode the hot-shooting hands of Brooklyn Whipple and Hanna Matthews to victory.

Elk City scored the first five points of the second quarter to build its six-point lead.

Matthews, Katelyn Stolz and Melody Wilfong then combined to close the half strong.

Matthews scored five, Wilfong four and Stolz a three-point play for the halftime lead.

Whipple then helped extend the lead to nine points when she made three consecutive 3-pointers in the third quarter.

She hit another early in the fourth as Kingfisher’s lead swelled to an insurmountable total.

Whipple scored all 16 of her points in the second half.

Matthews led the team with 17 points.

She helped Kingfisher keep the lead by making 7 of 8 free throws and scoring nine points in the fourth.

Stolz scored eight and Wilfong had six off the bench.

That win came after Friday night’s 35-27 victory against Cache, which eliminated the Lady Bulldogs.

Matthews went 7 of 9 from the foul line in the fourth to help Kingfisher pull away.

She scored 10.

Stolz led the team with 13 points.

KHS plays No. 13 Weatherford at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the area consolation quarterfinals.

Weatherford was defeated, 49-40, by No. 5 Anadarko in their regional championship game.

This will be the third meeting between KHS and the Lady Eagles this season. Weatherford owns win of 46-33 and 53-34 in the previous two.

The winner of Thursday’s game advances to play the winner of Blanchard and Clinton at 1:30 p.m. Friday in the consolation semifinals.

KHS enters area with a 14-12 record.
