OCA names Riley Myers region’s top male athlete
Several county coaches also pick up honors
The Oklahoma Coaches Association recently announced a laundry list of regional awards and Kingfisher County hauled in its share from athletes to coaches.
Kingfisher High School senior Riley Myers was named the Region 1 Male Athlete of the Year.
Region 1 covers 76 schools in Kingfisher, Canadian, Logan, Blaine, Garfield, Grant, Major, Alfalfa, Woods, Dewey, Custer, Woodward, Ellis, Beaver, Texas and Cimarron counties.
Myers makes it a repeat for KHS in winning the honor. Trey Green was the 2019 recipient.
The son of Jeff and Candyce Myers, he’s been active in football, track and field and basketball during his high school career.
He helped KHS to a 7-5 record and a spot in the second round of the Class 3A playoffs in the 2019 football season.
He was third on the team with 64 tackles and led the team with nine tackles for a loss.
He also caught six passes for 79 yards and two touchdowns on offense.
Myers is also a member of the National Honor Society and was listed on the superintendent’s honor roll.
He signed to play football at Northwestern Oklahoma State University earlier this year.
He receives a $500 scholarship and, as one of eight region winners, is also eligible to become the OCA’s Male Athlete of the Year.
Both basketball coaching honors landed in Kingfisher County.
Kevin Lewallen of Lomega was named the region’s high school girls coach of the year and Jared Reese of Kingfisher was tabbed for the boys.
Lewallen’s Lady Raiders went 30-2 and won the Class B state championship. They ended the season with a 29- game win streak.
Reese coached Kingfisher to a 26-1 mark. KHS won its first 25 games, which were part of a 47-game win streak overall.
The Jackets reached the Class 4A state tournament for the fourth consecutive year, but never played in it due to the coronavirus.
Erik Robinson of Cashion was named the region’s assistant coach of the year.
Robinson was a part of the Cashion football staff that guided the Wildcats to a Class A runner-up finish. He was also an assistant for both the boys and girls basketball teams. The CHS boys reached the 2A state tournament and the girls were one win short.
Derek Patterson of Kingfisher was named the junior high coach of the year.
Patterson’s honor came for his role in coaching the seventh and eighth grade boys basketball teams.
Also, in his first year as a full-time athletic director, Kingfisher’s Jay Wood was voted the region’s AD of the year.
