STAYING ALIVE
Dover boys extend their season at least 1 more day in B regional
Joriaun Caldwell provided most of the punch in getting Dover the lead.
Trinton Ritz and Damion Turner helped make sure it stuck.
The Longhorns kept their season alive Thursday by holding off Shidler 59-52 in their regional consolation quarterfinal at Mulhall-Orlando.
The good news for Dover (8-19) is that its season continued at least into Friday.
The bad news is the Longhorns were stuck with No. 8 Hammon (after press time) for the right to advance to Saturday’s regional consolation championship.
Hammon was upset by New Lima in a regional semifinal Thursday night.
Dover fell behind Shidler 17-14 after a quarter, but claimed the lead for good in the second quarter.
Caldwell scored 12 points as Dover outscored Shidler 22-16. He got help from Lance Dunigan and Kasen Harviston, who scored four points apiece in the frame.
Dover’s defense locked down in the third as it limited Shidler to eight points and extended its lead.
Caldwell had 30 points going into the fourth before going 1 of 4 from the foul line in the final eight minutes.
However, Ritz and Turner both went 3 of 4 as Dover held off Shidler despite not having a fourth-quarter field goal.
Caldwell led all scorers with 31 points.
Harviston finished his night with nine.
