Comeback falls short for KHS
Kingfisher had yet another furious comeback fall just short against a quality foe last week.
Trailing by 10 in the second half and by nine in the fourth quarter, the Lady Jackets rallied to lead 2A’s ifth-ranked Dale before eventually falling 51-48.
Dale led 36-26 in the final few minutes of the third quarter, was up eight after the third and was cruising, up 40-31 early in the fourth. That’

Kina Frost and Rayland Garner combined to score seven straight points to pull KHS within two with 5:18 to play before Ally Stephenson’s steal and layup tied the game just 14 seconds later. On Kingfisher’s next
On Kingfisher’s next possession, Jenna Mueggenborg’s offensive rebound and feed to Garner for a bucket put Kingfisher on top, 42-40, capping an 11-0 run.
Dale tied it back up seconds later then reclaimed the lead on a pair of Elaine Witt free throws.
Kingisher tied it up one more time - two Garner free throws with 3:30 left, but the Lady Jackets didn’t score again for two minutes.
That allowed Dale to build up a four-point lead, one it wouldn’t surrender.
Witt scored the final nine points for the Lady Pirates, including 7 of 8 free throws.
Two of them came with 48 seconds to play to give Dale a 50-46 lead.
Frost missed a trey on the other end, but Garner grabbed the rebound and hit a flashing Frost to make it a two-point game with 18 seconds remaining.
After Witt made it a three-point contest with a free throw a few seconds later, Frost’s would-be game-tying trey fell short just before the final buzzer.
The Lady Jackets committed 20 turnovers, 15 of which came in the first half. Still, they trailed just 19-17 at the break.
Dale made its biggest charge toward the end of the third quarter.
KHS stayed in the game in no short part due to its rebounding.
The Lady Jackets had 13 second-chance points from 10 offensive boards.
Overall, KHS out-rebounded Dale 34-19.
Garner led the Lady Jackets with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Frost scored 10 in just 18 minutes.
Stephenson chipped in seven more while Jenni Beebe had six points and six rebounds.
Witt scored 19 points for Dale.
