Consolation prize for Cashion?

It wasn’t “the big one,” but Cashion still brought home a championship last weekend.

Hours after its football team was defeated in the Class A state title game, the Cashion boys basketball team offered up a bit of consolation by knocking off Garber 61-55 in the fi - nals of the NextEra Energy Resources Invitational at Garber.

“It was a long day, but we ended it by beating a really good team,” said Cashion coach John Hardaway.

Garber entered the game unbeaten and is ranked No. 3 in Class A and jumped on top of Cashion 14-4 in the fi rst quarter.

“We just couldn’t make any shots early on,” Hardaway said.

Those shots started to fall in the second quarter and then poured in during the third.

Jacob Woody scored 11 in the second as Cashion cut its deficit to seven points.

In the third, it was sophomore Vance Raney who caught fi re.

The guard nailed four 3-pointers and scored 14 points as Cashion outscored Garber 26-15 to stake claim of the lead.

In all, Cashion nailed seven treys in the quarter: Two by Jonah Jenkins and Woody provided the other.

Woody added seven points as Cashion closed out the game in the fourth, including making all three of his free throw attempts.

The senior forward fi nished his night with 16 points.

Raney scored 19. All but two points came in the second half and he made fi ve 3-pointers overall.

Jenkins finished the night with 12 points as Cashion improved to 3-0 as its season began just two days before.

That was against Geary as Cashion opened the tournament with an 84-27 victory. The Wildcats were up 24-4 after a quarter and 54-7 at the break.

Woody scored 32 while Austin Frazier tossed in 16.

The Wildcats followed that up Friday by handing Burlington a 77-35 defeat in the semifi nals.

It was a 28-20 game at halftime before Cashion dominated the second half, including 23-2 in the fourth.

Woody led all scorers with 18.

Jenkins scored 17 while Raney and Frazier had 11 apiece.

Okarche boys take 4th place

After pulling off a big upset on the tournament’s first day, the Okarche boys had to settle for a fourth-place fi nish.

The Warriors were defeated 58-45 Saturday by Burlington in the consolation championship.

The tournament started on a much brighter note as Okarche handed Class A No. 11 Ripley a 34-30 defeat.

It was Ripley’s first loss of the season.

Okarche did it despite playing without starter Logan Kroener, who was out with a knee injury.

After falling behind 10-5 in the first quarter, Okarche gradually caught up and pulled ahead.

Kaleb Harris scored fi ve of his 16 points in the fourth as Okarche maintained its lead.

He made both of his foul shots in the fourth and Joe Schaefer went 4 for 4 from the line to help seal the win as well.

Schaefer finished with nine points.

“We were grinding it out,” said head coach Aaron West.

Host Garber dealt the Warriors a 72-48 defeat in the semifinals, outscoring them in every quarter.

Harris and Evan Endres scored 14 apiece while Schaefer added 13.

Against Burlington, the Elks flipped a deficit with a 16-4 run in the third quarter. Okarche shot just 2 for 12 in the quarter.

Schaefer scored 13 and Kroener, back in the lineup, added 12.
