Calumet holds off Lady Raider rally to start road sweep

Calumet apparently has Kingfi sher County’s number.

One week after defeating Okarche in its new gym, the Lady Chieftains handed Lomega its second loss of the season.

Calumet held off a furious Lady Raider rally to hold on to a 47-44 victory Tuesday at Lomega.

Behind a barrage of six fourth-quarter 3-pointers, Lomega was able to close a double-digit gap and tie the game in the waning minutes.

After Calumet reclaimed a three-point lead, the Lady Raiders had one last chance to tie, but Adysen Wilson’s 3-point attempt at the buzzer was long.

The loss dropped Lomega to 3-2, with both losses coming to Class A schools that should be ranked at least among the top-10 when rankings are released.

The Lady Raiders were without Rhett Glazier, who, according to coach Kevin Lewallen tore an ACL in the previous Friday’s win over Burlington.

That leaves Lomega without three would-be starters as Emma Duffy tore her ACL in the summer, though she is expected back sometime after Christmas.

Freshman Sydni Walker has yet to play this season due to injury, but is expected back soon, according to Lewallen.

Wilson made three first-quarter treys to keep Lomega within 12-11 with its visitors entering the second quarter.

That’s when Calumet started to open it up with a 12-5 run.

Calumet extended its lead to 10 points entering the fourth.

That’s when Lomega’s shooting finally picked back up again.

Shelby Russell and Darcy Roberts made two 3-pointers apiece while Reagan Ramer and Wilson added one apiece.

Roberts scored 13 while Russell scored eight.

Wilson led Lomega with 18.

Calumet got 24 points from Breanna Ray.

Calumet too much

for Raiders

The visitors dominated the second quarter and eventually the fi nal score Tuesday as Calumet’s boys disposed of Lomega 63-36.

Calumet was last year’s Class B state runner-up and returns a solid core from that team. The Chieftains moved up to Class A this year.

They led Lomega just 10-9 after a quarter, but blew the game open with a 25-4 run in the second.

Gunner Snowden was the biggest antagonist for the Raiders as he scored 12 points during that run and 25 overall.

The Chieftains also got 12 apiece from Mark Castillo and Seth Snyder.

Blake Snowden paced Lomega with 12 points, but was held scoreless in the middle two frames.

Noah Snowden added nine as Lomega dropped to 3-2 on the season.
