Calumet earns road sweep of Okarche

BrieMyers’second-quarter eruption proved to be the difference in Okarche’s first loss of the season.

Myers, Calumet’s sophomore shooting guard, sparked a huge eight-minute stretch as Calumet turned a defi cit into a halftime lead and then eventually a 53-46 win at Okarche High School’s gym.

Okarche led 16-12 after a quarter after it got fi ve 3-pointers from fi ve different Lady Warriors.

But, in the second, Myers made four of her own and scored 15 of Calumet’s 20 points in the quarter as it took a 32-29 lead.

Okarche (2-1) couldn’t maintain the shooting pace in the second half.

After making eight treys in the first half, the Lady Warriors were limited to two in the second while scoring just 17 points.

Rachel McDowell led the team with 16 points as she scored eight in each half.

Ryen Wittrock added 10 points.

Myers finished her night with 26 points.

Chieftains pull away late

Calumet controlled the second and fourth quarters last Tuesday to complete the sweep over Okarche.

The Chieftains shrugged off Okarche’s hot start with a 16-4 second-quarter run to spur a 54-40 win over the Warriors on their home court.

Calumet won the Class B state title in 2017, was a semifinalist in 2018 and the state runner-up last year.

The Chieftains have moved up to Class A this season and fell behind Okarche 17-12 after a quarter.

But Calumet put the clamps on defensively in the second quarter to take a halftime lead they wouldn’t give up.

Okarche kept it in single digits until the game’s fi nal closing minutes.

The Warriors were led by Kaleb Harris’ 16 points. He was the only Okarche player in double fi gures.

The Warriors shot 58 percent in the first half, but were limited to 37 percent in the second.

Calumet out-rebounded the Warriors 31-18 overall.

Gunner Snowden scored 18 points and pulled down 13 boards for the Chieftains.

Ryan Island added 18 points and seven rebounds.
